Better Place, la firma que está desarrollando una red a gran escala de puntos de recarga para coches eléctricos, ha presentado la máquina que utilizará en sus estaciones de cambio de baterías. Better Place ha demostrado que de algún modo es posible emparejar el tiempo que requiere recargar un coche eléctrico con el que conlleva llenar actualmente un depósito de combustible.
Para lograr este propósito Better Place propone combinar puntos de recarga de batería convencionales (es decir, enchufes) en ciudades con estaciones automatizadas capaces de realizar el cambio de baterías que estaría situadas en el extra radio y carreteras. El cambiador de baterías puede sustituir una batería gastada por una totalmente cargada en menos de un minuto. Y no es necesario que los ocupantes bajen del vehículo.

La operación es tan rápida que posiblemente te cueste más llenar el depósito, aunque esta velocidad tiene un precio: medio millón de dólares (370.000 euros). Obviamente será más asequible una vez entre en producción; entonces, deberían ser instaladas en 100 áreas de servicio de Israel, donde próximamente Better Place comenzará su experimento eléctrico en colaboración con el grupo Renault-Nissan (que proporcionará los vehículos).
Better Place tiene ya 17 puntos de recarga repartidos por Tel Aviv -alguno de estos modelos podría fabricarse en España y por otro con gobiernos e instituciones oficiales para comenzar a desplegar su red en regiones como –además de Israel– Dinamarca, Australia y California.

BATTERY SWITCH STATIONS
The Better Place battery switch stations are designed to allow drivers on a long trip to switch a depleted battery for one with a full charge, in less time than it takes to fill a tank with gasoline.
At a Better Place switch station, the driver enters a lane and proceeds along a switch-lane conveyor. The automated switch platform below the vehicle will align under the battery, initiate the battery release process and lower the battery from the vehicle. It will then replace the depleted battery with a fully-charged battery. The depleted battery is placed in a storage room and recharged to be available to other drivers. The process is completed in just a few minutes, while the driver remains in the car, providing a fast and convenient range-extension solution.
